One of the reference books to have is the Arrl Repeater Directory.
Ray(KE5WGA) told me something that I had not noticed.
The repeater directory also has a listing of Echolink and IRLP repeaters.
It also talks about D-Star.
Somebody will add a post on D-Star.
For Now somebody please leave a comment about D-Star.

D-Star is a format of transmitting digital voice and data. The format is not really a secret, and it is supported by the JRRL (ARRL in Japan) but not really marketed here in the States except by ICOM. D-STARs rigs are available for 2m, 70cm and one of the microwave bands. On the microwave bands a much wider bandwidth for data is available.
To deploy D-STARS, a club or a group of folks would have to set up a D-STARS repeater up somewhere high. The folks would have to pony up for ID-1 base / mobile rigs. These would probably need directional antennas line-of-site back to the repeater.
I'm not sure that the point of D-STARS on VHF/UHF would be (except for better audio quality at times) since the data rates are not much better than packet or APRS.
